E. Coli Testing
The Riverwatch Team has been conducting
testing for E. coli and total coliform bacteria at 25
different locations in the Niagara River Watershed.
Riverkeeper utilizes our Idexx QuantiTray/2000 system,
housed at Buffalo State College's Great Lakes Center, for
these tests.
We are testing to see whether E. coli counts are high
in areas where people fish and swim. Factors
contributing to high coliform counts include
combined
sewer overflows in Buffalo and Niagara Falls (occurring
after storm events), sanitary sewer overflows in all
suburbs, and failing septic systems in rural areas.
The E. coli
readings have been put into charts. We have indicated
a maximum of 298 colonies/100mL as the limit to which the
water should be safe to swim, kayak, or engage in any other
activity that requires moderate full body contact with the
water. This benchmark is based on the EPA's Water
Quality Standards. To read the full report,

Precipitation charts for 2007 are also included.
